Welcome to the Ramstedt group

The research in our group is highly interdisciplinary in the area between materials chemistry and microbiology. Together with several international collborators, we work to prevent bacterial adhesion onto surfaces through both applied and fundamental research. The applied part deals with formation of different types of antibacterial or antifouling surfaces. The fundamental research aims to understand the processes that govern bacterial colonization of surfaces including initial adhesion and biofilm formation. As model surfaces, we mainly use polymeric surface coatings in the form of polymer brushes. We perform biological testing on different Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria as well as on different mammalian cell lines. The long term aim of several of the research projects is to create surfaces that prevent bacterial biofilm formation but do not harm mammalian tissue. However, we have recently started up a project on environmental biofilms and their role in degradation and/or accumulation of pharmaceutical substances in fresh water streams.

The work in the group started in 2009 and we are positioned at Umeå University in the north of Sweden. We are associated to the Umeå Center for Microbial Reserach (UCMR) and perform lab work both at the Department of Chemistry and Department of Molecular Biology.
